Facebook Lite hits 200 million users, gets speed and reliability improvements
Facebook Lite, the lighter version of the social network now has more than 200 million users. Launched in 2015, Facebook Lite uses less data and is therefore aimed at users living in emerging markets that have slow internet connection.
The app which weighs less than 1MB clocked 100 million monthly active users in January last year. At that time the app received several features, including support for video playback, upload multiple photos, pinch-to-zoom for photos, emojis and more. The latest update has added performance and speed improvements to the app. According to TechCrunch, the Facebook Lite app is now available in Israel, Italy, United Arab Emirates, and South Korea. It is already present in Africa and Asia: Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg wrote in a blog post,
In many areas, networks can be slow and unable to support all the functions available on Facebook. FB Lite gives people access to core Facebook experiences like News Feed more quickly and while consuming less data.
