Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, the governor
of Niger state, has reported about the local
government plans to produce one million
metric tonnes of rice during dry season.
According to Chief Audu Ogbeh, the minister
of agriculture and rural development, the
state expects the federal government to
provide irrigation equipment to rice farmers.
Solar power water pumping machines, small
rice milling facilities, threshers and
combined harvesters will ease rice
processing and allow to self sustain its
production.
Subesquently, it would bring down the price
of the commodity in the open market.
The plans were made public during the
inspection of the rice farms cultivated under
the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Anchor
Borrowers Programme in Danchitagi, the
Lavun local government area.

So far, about N2 billion had been expended
in the state through the CBN anchor
borrowers program.
The results of the scheme in Niger state:
– newly created jobs for the youths;
– 1,700 out of 2,000 rice farmers from 57
cooperative societies had benefited from the
program during dry season farming;
– 907 cotton farmers were to benefit from
the scheme;
– 90,000 square kilometers of land is
currently available for cultivation;
The latest Naij.com price checking has
showed that despite frantic efforts by the
federal government to put things in order in
the country, the prices of goods and
services continue to rise in various markets
across the country.
